If your home is more than a few years old, it might be time to invest in a building survey. This is especially important if your home has also survived its' fair share of storms. You might not realise this, but intense storms and age-related wear and tear can undermine the structural integrity of your home. That's where a building survey comes in handy. A building survey will identify all the problem areas that need to be addressed, which can protect your home from further damage. If you're not sure whether you need a building survey, read the list provided below. If you've encountered any of these issues with your home, schedule an inspection with a building surveyor right away.

You've Discovered Cracks

If your home is getting older, you might think that cracks in the walls are to be expected. However, that's not actually the case. Cracks in the walls can be a sign that your home has sustained damage to the foundation. Cracks can appear in both the exterior and interior walls. If you've discovered a crack on any of your walls, walk around your home and make a note of any other cracks you find. Pay close attention to the areas around your doors and along the space between your walls and your ceilings. If you find more than just that single crack, call for a building survey as soon as possible.

Your Windows Have Gaps

During construction, windows are installed to fit snugly within the frame of the house. Due to the natural aging process and structure settling, your windows might become more difficult to open and close over time. However, they should continue to fit snugly within the frame of your home. If you've discovered gaps between the frame of your home and your windows, there's a good chance that your home has sustained some structural damage over the years. Now's the time to schedule a building survey.

Your Floors are a bit Edgy

If you've discovered a bit of an edge to your floor, you need to schedule a building survey. Edges develop when the ground settles under your home, causing the foundation to buckle. Buckling can cause the concrete to separate, which leads to an uneven edge that you can feel under your feet. Sloping is another problem that can occur when your home sustains structural damage. If the floors in your home have developed an edge or a slope, you need to arrange for a building survey immediately.
